Digital Craft: CNC Meets Hand Finishing

Where the machine stops and the hand begins: a study on the tactile finish of the Arc Chair.

A CNC machine can mill an oak frame to a tenth of a millimetre. It cannot decide how that frame should feel under a hand.

Machine for precision

Joints, channels and every surface that touches another part are milled. Precision there means the chair stays tight for decades.

Hand for touch

Arms, edges and the top of the backrest are finished by hand with scrapers and oil. Those are the places people touch every day.
